ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aims to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure in migraine patients with a massive right-to-left shunt (RLS) and white matter lesions (WMLs). Methods: The research focused on migraine patients with a massive RLS who underwent PFO closure in our hospital from June 2020 to June 2021. The study included 51 patients without WMLs (control group, CG) and 27 patients with WMLs (observation group, OG). A 12-month postoperative follow-up survey was conducted to assess headache episodes (frequency and duration), evaluated using the Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6) and the Pain Intensity Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The psychological state was also evaluated using the Hamilton Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAMA, HAMD). Adverse reactions during the follow-up were recorded. Results: No significant differences in perioperative and prognostic adverse reactions were observed between OG and CG (P > .05). Both groups showed a reduction in postoperative headache episodes and pain intensity. However, the OG exhibited higher frequency and duration of headache episodes and elevated HIT-6 and VAS scores, resulting in lower clinical efficacy (P < .05). Postoperatively, both groups demonstrated reductions in HAMA and HAMD, with CG showing lower scores compared to OG (P < .05). Logistic regression analysis identified the course of the disease, HIT-6 score, and the presence of WMLs as independent risk factors for the efficacy of PFO closure (P < .05). Conclusions: PFO closure proves effective and safe in treating migraine patients with RLS. However, for those with WMLs, clinical attention should be directed toward the treatment of WMLs.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying odontoblast damage repair in dentin hypersensitivity (DH) and the role of Yes-associated protein (YAP) in this process. METHODS: The DH model was constructed in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, and the in vivo expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvß3, YAP, and dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) was detected by immunohistochemistry. COMSOL Multiphysics software was used to simulate the dentinal tubule fluid flow velocity and corresponding fluid shear stress (FSS) on the odontoblast processes. MDPC-23 cells were cultured in vitro and loaded with a peristaltic pump for 1 hour at FSS values of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 dyne/cm2. The expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvß3, and YAP was detected by immunofluorescence. Verteporfin (a YAP-specific inhibitor) was utilised to confirm the effect of YAP on the expression of dentineogenesis-related protein under FSS. RESULTS: The level and duration of external mechanical stimuli have an effect on the functional expression of odontoblasts. In DH, the harder the food that is chewed, the faster the flow of the dentinal tubule fluid and the greater the FSS on the odontoblast processes. The expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvß3, and YAP can be promoted when the FSS is less than 0.3 dyne/cm2. After YAP inhibition, the DSPP protein expression level was reduced at 0.3 dyne/cm2 FSS. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that appropriate FSS can enhance the expression of odontoblast-related factors in odontoblasts via the Piezo1-Integrin αvß3-YAP mechanotransduction pathway and the YAP appears to play an essential role in the response of odontoblasts to external mechanical stimuli.

ABSTRACT

This research proposes a simulation-based assessment of outdoor thermal and acoustic comfort for a planned business urban district in Singapore for retail planning using a customized OpenFOAM-centric multi-physics environmental simulation platform called the Integrated Environmental Modeller (IEM). IEM was employed to simulate the coupled impacts of solar radiation on wind and air temperature and wind and air temperature effects on traffic noise propagation in the district on the equinox and solstice day of the hottest period. Using IEM simulation results, we computed the thermal and acoustic comfort acceptability indicators derived from local field studies' results. The spatial distribution of environmental comfort acceptability indicators in the worst-case scenario can be used to distinguish the zones exposed to thermal or noise influence. The noise-affected zones are near the main roads and overlap a part of the thermal-affected area. The thermal-affected area is almost everywhere in the studied sites in the worst-case scenario. Having outdoor retail spaces with both poor thermal and acoustic comfort is not recommended if the thermal and acoustic comfort cannot be improved simultaneously. For the high-level retail planning, a simplified parametric analysis considering solar irradiance blockage and wind speed enhancements, is provided. Considering the worst-case scenario, ≥50% thermal acceptability can be achieved by blocking 54%-68% solar irradiance among the pedestrian thoroughfares and the retail spaces. Coupled together, blocking the solar irradiance and enhancing the wind speed can further improve thermal comfort locally. These results can guide the retail mix (e.g., al fresco restaurants, pop-up kiosks etc.) near high footfall areas and provide reference for future plans combining landscape and infrastructure, (e.g., trees with shelter walkaways, green walls with outdoor ventilation fans etc.) taking into account the environmental acceptability of people working in or visiting the tropical urban district.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To explore whether the obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has an impact on thyroid function in patients. METHOD: The data of 853 patients were retrospectively collected from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University in recent ten years. All the objects were divided into the control group, mild-moderate and severe OSA groups according to the result of polysomnography. RESULTS: In the non-elderly population (age <60), there were significant differences in serum free triiodothyronine (FT3) and total triiodothyronine (TT3) between the mild-moderate and severe OSA groups (all p < 0.05). And there were differences in serum total thyroxine, anti-thyroid peroxidase, and antithyroglobulin between the control and mild-moderate OSA groups (all p < 0.05). Moreover, FT3 was associated with age (OR = 0.98, p < 0.05) and apnea-hypopnea index (OR = 1.01, p < 0.05). The occurrence of thyroid nodules was associated with average transcutaneous oxygen saturation (Mean SaO2) (OR = 0.97, p < 0.05). In the elderly (age ≥60), there was no difference in FT3 and TT3 between the mild-moderate and severe OSA. While the occurrence of thyroid nodules was also associated with Mean SaO2 (OR = 0.90, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In the non-elderly population, the progress of OSA may promote the increase in thyroid hormone (especially FT3) levels, while in the elderly population not. In the whole age population, Mean SaO 2 is associated with the occurrence of thyroid nodules. Future research on the relationship between OSA and thyroid function, and age stratification is necessary.

ABSTRACT

Polymeric dispersants are useful materials used in many different industries and often derived from oil-based chemicals, for example, in automotive fluids so as to prevent particulates from precipitation and causing potential damage. These are very often polyisobutene derivatives, and there is a growing need to replace these using chemicals using renewable resources such as the use of naturally occurring myrcene. Polymyrcene (PMy), with an ordered microstructure, has been successfully synthesized via both anionic and radical polymerization in different solvents and subsequently subjected to functionalization via photoinduced thiol-ene click reactions with a number of thiols, methyl thioglycolate, 3-mercaptopropionic acid, 3-mercapto-1-hexanol, 2-mercaptoethanol, and 1-thioglycerol, using 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone as a photoinitiator under UV irradiation (λ = 365 nm) at ambient temperature. The polarity of the solvent has an important impact on the microstructure of the produced polymyrcene and, in particular, 1,2-unit (∼4%), 3,4-unit (∼41%), and 1,4-unit (∼51%) PMy were obtained via anionic polymerization in a polar solvent (THF) at ambient temperature, while 3,4-unit (∼6%) and 1,4-unit (∼94%, including cis and trans) PMy were obtained with cyclohexane as the solvent. Subsequently, photochemical thiol-ene reactions were carried out on the resulting PMy with different isomers exhibiting different reactivities of the double bonds. This strategy allows for the introduction of functional/polar groups (-COOH, -OH) into hydrophobic PMy in a controlled process. Hydrogenation of PMy and derivatized PMy was carried out to investigate any effects on the stabilities of the products which are desirable for many applications.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes an investigating SARS-CoV-2 inactivation on surfaces with UV-C LED irradiation using our in-house-developed ray-tracing simulator. The results are benchmarked with experiments and Zemax OpticStudio commercial software simulation to demonstrate our simulator's easy accessibility and high reliability. The tool can input the radiant profile of the flexible LED source and accurately yield the irradiance distribution emitted from an LED-based system in 3D environments. The UV-C operating space can be divided into the safe, buffer, and germicidal zones for setting up a UV-C LED system. Based on the published measurement data, the level of SARS-CoV-2 inactivation has been defined as a function of UV-C irradiation. A realistic case of public space, i.e., a food court in Singapore, has been numerically investigated to demonstrate the relative impact of environmental UV-C attenuation on the SARS-CoV-2 inactivation. We optimise a specific UV-C LED germicidal system and its corresponding exposure time according to the simulation results. These ray-tracing-based simulations provide a useful guideline for safe deployment and efficient design for germicidal UV-C LED technology.

ABSTRACT

Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge. var. major) is an edible and medicinal fruit that is very common in food and traditional Chinese medicine. Corosolic acid (CA), a pentacyclic triterpenoid, which is an active component of hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge. var. major), has been exhibiting various pharmacological activities such as antidiabetic, antibacterial, anticancer, antiinflammatory, and antioxidant effects. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of CA on non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in mice induced by 60 kcal% high-fat diet (HFD) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ). CA lowered liver index and serum AST, ALT, TG, and TC levels compared to those in the model group. Histological analyses of the liver tissues of mice treated with CA revealed significantly decreased number of lipid droplets and alleviated inflammation and fibrosis. CA inhibited the transcripts of pro-fibrogenic markers (including α-SMA, collagen I, and TIMP-1) and the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (including TNF-α, IL-1ß, caspase-1, and IL-6) associated with hepatic fibrosis, and NF-κB translocation and TGF-ß1/Smad2 and AMPK pathways. In addition, CA reduced lipid accumulation via the regulation of AMPK and NF-κB activation in FFA-induced steatotic HepG2 cells. CA also decreased α-SMA, collagen I expressions, and Smad2 phosphorylation, which were reduced by TGF-ß1 treatment in LX2 cells. Our results suggested that CA ameliorated NASH through regulating TGF-ß1/Smad2, NF-κB, and AMPK signaling pathways, and CA could be developed as a potential health functional food or therapeutic agent for NASH patients.

ABSTRACT

Corosolic acid (CA) is the main active component of Lagetstroemia speciosa and has been known to serve as several different pharmacological effects, such as antidiabetic, anti-oxidant, and anticancer effects. In this study, effects of CA on the hepatic lipid accumulation were examined using HepG2 cells and tyloxapol (TY)-induced hyperlipidemia ICR mice. CA significantly inhibited hepatic lipid accumulation via inhibition of SREBPs, and its target genes FAS, SCD1, and HMGCR transcription in HepG2 cells. These effects were mediated through activation of AMPK, and these effects were all abolished in the presence of compound C (CC, an AMPK inhibitor). In addition, CA clearly alleviated serum ALT, AST, TG, TC, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, and obviously attenuated TY-induced liver steatosis and inflammation. Moreover, CA significantly upregulated AMPK, ACC, LKB1 phosphorylation, and significantly inhibited lipin1, SREBPs, TNF-α, F4/80, caspase-1 expression, NF-κB translocation, and MAPK activation in TY-induced hyperlipidemia mice. Our results suggest that CA is a potent antihyperlipidemia and antihepatic steatosis agent and the mechanism involved both lipogenesis and cholesterol synthesis and inflammation response inhibition via AMPK/SREBPs and NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathways.

ABSTRACT

Active triangulation range finders are widely used in a variety of applications such as robotics and assistive technologies. The power of the laser source should be carefully selected in order to satisfy detectability and still remain eye-safe. In this paper, we present a systematic approach to assess the detectability of an active triangulation range finder in an outdoor environment. For the first time, we accurately quantify the background noise of a laser system due to solar irradiance by coupling the Perez all-weather sky model and ray tracing techniques. The model is validated with measurements with a modeling error of less than 14.0%. Being highly generic and sufficiently flexible, the proposed model serves as a guide to define a laser system for any geographical location and microclimate.

ABSTRACT

Based on Mie scattering theory and the assumption that the particle is electrically small in size (k(t)a≪1,k(m)a≪1), an analytic relationship between radial and tangential permittivity parameters has been established for achieving minimal scattering from an arbitrary rotationally uniaxial anisotropic spherical object incident by a plane wave. Analysis of fields in both the far- and near-field zones indicates that the derived relation is not only valid for electrically small particles, but also applicable to larger ones whose sizes are comparable with the free space wavelength after slight adjustments in parameters. Furthermore, it is observed that the dielectric spherical particle of reduced tangential permittivity yields better transparency performance than the design using a plasmonic cover by Alu and Engheta [Phys. Rev. E 72, 016623 (2005)]. As such, particles with carefully engineered radial anisotropy are transparent without using any coating and are ideal for applications with space constraint and stringent transparency criteria.
